Glossary
Appendectomy
Surgical removal of the vermiform appendix.
Azoospermia
Absence of living spermatozoa in the semen and failure of spermatogenesis, this process involving the formation and development of the spermatozoon or spermatozoa (plural).
Biomedicine
The natural sciences especially biological and physiological sciences that relate to medicine.
Centrifugation
Separation by rotation and whirling in a vessel of particles suspended in a fluid.
Chemotherapy
Treatment of disease by chemicals or drugs.
Conception
The fertilization of an oocyte (ovum) by a spermatozoon.
Cystic Fibrosis
A congenital metabolic disorder inherited as a recessive trait in which secretions of the exocrine glands are abnormal.
Electrophoresis
The movement of particles (chromosomes in this paper) in an electric field.
Epidemiology
The study of the prevalence and spread of disease in the community.
Fallopian Tube
The uterine tube through which an oocyte is conveyed from the ovary into the uterus. Fertilization may occur in either the right or left fallopian tube.
Fertilization
The process that begins with the penetration of the secondary oocyte by the spermatozoon and is completed by the fusion of the male and female pronuclei.
Gametes
Hereditary germ cells that is, an ovum (egg) in the female and a spermatozoon (sperm) in the male.
Gene
The functional unit of heredity.
Gynaecology
The Study of disease of the female genital tract ,is well is female hormonal and reproductive physiology.
Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver, usually from a viral infection.
Huntington's Chorea
An hereditary disease of a chronic degenerative nature manifesting itself between the ages of 30 and 50 years involving exaggerated movements of the face and extremities and gradual loss of mental faculties ending in dementia
IVF or In Vitro Fertilization
The process of fertilization accomplished outside the body (in vitro as opposed to in vivo) now established as a clinical procedure for the alleviation of infertility.
Insemination
The deposit of seminal fluid within the vagina.
Obstetrics
The specialty of medicine concerned with the care of pregnant women during and after pregnancy.
Oligospermia
A subnormal concentration of spermatozoa in the penile ejaculate. (It has been brought to our attention that the word oligozoospermia may also be used to indicate this and that oligospermia may be used to indicate “a small volume of semen”. We do not use the word oligozoospermia in this Paper, and we use the word oligospermia in sense first mentioned.)
Oocyte
The immature ovum.
Ovum
Female gamete or sex cell produced in the ovary and when fertilized by a spermatozoon is capable of developing into a new individual of the same species.
Progeny
Offspring and descendants of a person.
Recessive Gene
A gene possessed by one parent, present in that parent's offspring, which is not expressed in that offspring because of suppression by a contrasting gene from the other parent.
Reproduction
The union of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
Rubella
Disease of maternal lymph nodes caused by a virus resulting in high incidence of abnormalities of the fetus in utero.
Semen
Fluid secretion containing spermatozoa emitted during ejaculation
Speculum
An instrument made of metal or plastic used for enlarging the opening of any bodily canal or cavity to facilitate inspection.
Spermatozoon (Spermatozoa plural)
Free swimming (autokinetic) male gamete or sex cell produced in the testicle which is able to effect zygosis (fertilization) with an ovum.
Tay-Sachs Disease
An infantile disease characterized by failure to thrive, spastic paralysis, blindness and mental deterioration.
Thalassaemia
A group of inherited disorders of the haemoglobin.
Therapeutic
Relating to the treatment of disease.
