History of this Reference (Digest)

The Commission has been greatly assisted in the preparation of this Working Paper by discussions with a number of people. Most significantly, the former Sheriff of New South Wales, Mr. G.F. Hanson, the Acting-Sheriff of New South Wales, Mr. D. Lennon, and officers of the Sheriff's Office have been available at all times to answer queries, to explain procedures and, particularly with respect to the empirical research programme, to actively participate in assisting the Commission's work. The Commission extends its gratitude to the Sheriff's Office for this co-operation and assistance.

The Chief Justice of New South Wales, the Honourable Sir Laurence Street, K.C.M.G., the Honourable Mr, Justice J.A. Lee and the Honourable Mr. Justice J.R.T. Wood of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and His Honour Judge J.H. Staunton, C.B.E., Chief Judge of the District Court of New South Wales kindly examined the draft questionnaire for the Survey of Judges and made valuable suggestions with respect to it. The enthusiastic support and assistance that we have been given by the judiciary has been a source of considerable encouragement to the Commission in the course of its work on criminal procedure.

The Commission was assisted by communication with the Victorian Law Reform Commission, and particularly with Ms. Mariette Read, an officer of that Commission. The Commission is also appreciative of the time and effort devoted by three associates who have tested survey forms and discussed the issues raised . They are Ms. Christine Hafey, associate to His Honour Judge R.M. Court of the District Court of New South Wales, Ms. Catherine Lewin, associate to the Honourable Mr. Justice Adrian Roden of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and Ms. Beverley Dalley, associate to the Honourable Mr. Justice A.V. Maxwell of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

The Commission would also like to thank the following people who provided valuable suggestions, comments and information and made submissions in response to a background paper entitled "Long Criminal Trials" prepared by Paul Byrne in January 1985:
